Variant of `lowlands' and a name for Lowland
Scots, whether conceived as a language in its
own right or as a northern dialect of
English. Because of its rustic associations,
Lallans has been known since the 18th century
as `the Doric', in contrast with the `Attic'
usage of Edinburgh (`the Athens of the
North'). See Scots language.
