  2. Scots, whether conceived as a language in its
  3. own right or as a northern dialect of
  4. English. Because of its rustic associations,
  5. Lallans has been known since the 18th century
  6. as `the Doric', in contrast with the `Attic'
  7. usage of Edinburgh (`the Athens of the
  8. North'). See Scots language.
